Last year of the current model before a full redesign for the 2015 model year

Retro styling, complete with sequential rear signal lights and a short rear deck lid

V-6 or V-8 power, surprising fuel efficiency on the highway (V-6)

The 2014 Ford Mustang is a modern take on a classic car, offering muscle car power and styling but with a (surprising) hint of efficiency.

Few vehicles embody American iconography more than the Ford Mustang, and the 2014 model year is no exception. 2014 marks the final year of the current Mustang, itís scheduled for a wheels up redesign for the 2015 model year. Rumor also has it that this Mustang will be the last one with a live rear axle, so if burnouts are your thing itís time to jump on a Mustang while you can.

The Mustang is offered in plenty of different trims. Both the V-6 and GT models (V-8) are offered in base, premium, or convertible trim levels. There are also coupe/convertible trims of the powerful Shelby GT500 (covered separately).

The rear-wheel drive Mustangís base engine is a 3.7-liter, V-6 with 305-horsepower and 280 pounds feet of torque. The 5.0-liter V-8 engine is capable of 420-horsepower and 390 pounds feet of torque. Both V-6 and GT models offer a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

The Mustangís focus will always put performance ahead of fuel economy, so drivers should not expect long stretches between fill-ups. That being said, the V-6 is startlingly efficient for an engine with that much power and displacement, delivering the strongest fuel economy performance of the lot, with 19 mpg in the city and 29-31 mpg on the highway. The GTís V-8 engine comes in at 15-18 mpg in the city and 25-26 mpg on the highway, while the Boss delivers a similar performance.

Sporty interior styling marks the Mustang, with soft-touch trim wrapping the instrument panel, and available aluminum-styled interior accents. Cloth seating, with front bucket seats and 50/50 split-fold rear seats in the coupe, are standard offerings while seat upgrades include RECARO cloth sport seats or front heated, leather-trimmed front seats in premium models. The standard entertainment system includes an auxiliary audio jack and Ford Sync, with hands-free Bluetooth calling and voice-activated music search and web app control, is optional. A premium Shaker audio system with HD radio is available, and includes upgraded speakers and an MP3-compatible CD-player. Navigation system and tech packages, with leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, are also available.

The 2014 Mustang features a race-inspired front air splitter and the classic Mustang logo on the grille. Standard high-intensity discharge headlights and LED accents in the headlights and taillights add visibility, and fog lamps are an available option. A glass roof with SPF 50-equivalent sun protection is available for those who want the look and rigidity of a coupe but still want to let some rays in. Drivers can customize the look of their Mustang with a number of available packages, including a V6 Pony Package or Mustang Club of America Package for more classic styling. Boss models feature racetrack-inspired styling and high-performance options.

Safety features include dual front airbags, driver and passenger side impact airbags, electronic stability control, and a crash alert system. The Mustang is also equipped with a remote keyless entry system, tire pressure monitoring system, and an anti-theft system. The Ford MyKey system comes standard, allowing parents of young drivers to set speed and safety controls, and enables alerts to help teen drivers develop safe driving habits.

The 2014 Ford Mustang is the best-selling muscle car in the land, out pacing the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger of late. The first generations of muscle car required compromise, but this latest Mustang offers the total package, with comfort, performance, and fuel economy all present and accounted for.
