New turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine available

One of the few midsize sedans to offer all-wheel drive

Modern, attractive styling

For 2014, the Ford Fusion midsize sedan doesnít rest on its laurels after a full redesign in 2013 adding a new engine and several other interior options to a stylish package that is sure to turn heads.

Ford apparently took a few notes when they once owned Aston Martin, itís easy to see that brandís influence in the styling of the new Fusion from its slim, hexagonal grille, to the creases on the hood and the slim headlight fixtures. This latest version of the Fusion is one of the best looking cars on the road today, let alone midsize sedans. The rear tailpipes are integrated into the rear bumper and prominent character lines down the sides of the car give it the appearance of forward motion, even when standing still. 16- to 19-inch wheels are available (depending on trim level), along with an optional power moonroof.

Under the hood, the Fusionís engine options all carryover and for 2014 a new engine has been introduced, a 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. The base engine remains a 175-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder, with a trio of optional EcoBoost engines offered as well. The 173-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder and 231-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder return, joined by the new engine which makes 175-hp. Ford claims the new 1.5-liter EcoBoost will return better fuel economy and can also be outfitted with an auto start/stop system for even more fuel savings. Six-speed manual or automatic transmissions are offered. All-wheel drive is available on the Titanium trim.

Inside, the Fusion features a modern looking interior that is full of tech options. Standard features include cloth seating (leather optional), air conditioning, cruise control, a 60/40-split folding backseat, SYNC voice commands, and an auxiliary audio input. MyFord Touch, which replaces many of the physical controls in the center console with touch sensitive buttons is optional, as are a navigation system, Sony audio system with HD radio, and dual zone automatic climate control.

The 2014 Fusion is one of the best performing vehicles in crash testing, earning a rare double by garnering a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA in addition to a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. New for 2014 are optional, inflatable rear seatbelts which help to disperse the impact of a crash on rear passengers. Four-wheel disc antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, and front knee airbags are all standard.
